We are working with a lot of non-profit groups in this area and on the Internet. I have some friends in Florida that run the organization Kids Hooked on Fishing. Why are we talking about an organization in Florida here in Delaware? KHOF is a good organization and since the Internet makes this a much smaller world, we can find information faster and share with our readers. I asked Sue Olsen, President and founder of Kids Hooked on Fishing, if she ever had anything I could help her with, to let me know. She has been very helpful in the past to DSF. This is also a great product for safety and possible fundraisers for other non-profit groups. I asked her to send me a few HookSafe-Safety Covers to “test” and show to some of the non-profit groups in my area. This is also a great product for anyone with young children whom fish or are around a lot of fishing gear. I have to say I am impressed. I decided to forego the actual “test”, mostly because none of my friends would lend me a child. I just wanted to do a good comparison test, I don’t see the big deal,
a description will have to suffice.
HookSafe is an “easy to use” system, even for a child. You twist the fish hook’s curve into the “posts” to hold the hook in place. The top has a circular hollow “pin” that once closed covers the small “posts” that holds the hook in place. This creates a “pin” that keeps the hook from pulling out of the case. The line or hook shaft has clearance through the top of the case. The clip on the back of the case, allows it to be attached to the eyelet, and the line can be tightened for further safety. Just like “hooking” a hook to your eyelet, only much safer. This is a clever idea. Fish hooks flying through the air, replaced by a plastic case is much safer. I have seen many a child get hooked by excited kids running with loose gear. I seem to remember “wearing” a fish hook or two as a child.
The HookSafe-Safety Cover system is not available commercially. If you would like to know more about purchasing the HookSafe-Safety Cover system please contact Sue Olsen at the Kids Hooked on Fishing organization,(772-918-4560). Proceeds from these sales do go towards the KHOF organization. Just by purchasing a few cases at the 5$ donation fee will help KHOF in their efforts for children and their safety.
